14th Venice Architecture Biennale

LAST, LONELIEST, LOVELIEST

In 2014 David Mitchell’s winning exhibition proposal ‘Last, Loneliest, Loveliest’ was chosen by the jury to be the first ever New Zealand entry
in the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale. The title is from a Rudyard Kipling line applied to the colonial city of Auckland in Songs of the Cities.

Like all the country exhibitions in the 2014 Biennale, which was titled ‘Fundamentals’, New Zealand’s exhibition was a response to the theme, ‘Absorbing Modernity: 1914-2014′. Creative teams were asked to reflect on the relationship between modernisation and national styles of architecture over the past century.
